Liverpool are one of the most successful football clubs in England and Europe with an expert coaching staff beside manager Jurgen Klopp. But who features among the German’s backroom team at Anfield?
Manager: Jurgen Klopp
Anfield chiefs appointed Jurgen Klopp as the latest manager of Liverpool Football Club back in October 2015. The German has since extended his contract with the Premier League giants until June 2026. He last put pen to paper on fresh terms with the Merseysiders in April 2022.
Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm and has overseen the club’s revival as a force throughout Europe. Only in his first season as the Reds’ head coach has the club finished a Premier League campaign outside of the top four. They also lifted the top-flight title in 2019/20.
It marked the end of a 30-year wait for Liverpool to win the top-flight again and secure their first Premier League crown. It further followed Klopp guiding the club to the Champions League title in 2018/19. They have reached the final of UEFA’s competition three times with Klopp.
Assistant manager: Pep Lijnders
Liverpool initially hired Pep Lijnders as a U18s coach in August 2014 but he joined Klopp’s coaching staff in 2015. The Dutchman held the position until January 2018 but left to take over at NEC Nijmegen. Yet his tenure in charge of the Dutch outfit only lasted five months.
Klopp welcomed Lijnders back to Anfield as his assistant manager once again in June 2018. While Liverpool have since extended his contract until June 2026 with the 40-year-old also enjoying greater responsibilities. Klopp often lets him take their EFL Cup press conferences.
Assistant manager: Peter Krawietz
Liverpool brought Peter Krawietz to Anfield in October 2015 alongside Klopp after appointing him as their latest manager. He had been the German’s right-hand man at Borussia Dortmund for seven years, as well. Klopp took him with him having been his chief scout at FSV Mainz 05.
Most of Krawietz’s work for the Reds is behind the scenes with Klopp trusting the German’s attention to detail. His role in Liverpool’s coaching staff is mostly focused on match analysis and set pieces. While Klopp dubbed Krawietz ‘The Eye’ for his strengths in scouting opponents.
Head of goalkeeping: John Achterberg
Klopp has kept John Achterberg in Liverpool’s coaching staff since joining the club with the Dutchman among the club’s longest-serving individuals. He first joined the Reds in 2009 as a reserve-team coach before moving up to the first-team in 2011 under Sir Kenny Dalglish.
Goalkeeping coach: Claudio Taffarel
Klopp added to Liverpool’s coaching staff in November 2021 as Claudio Taffarel joined as a goalkeeping specialist. He has also served the same role with the Brazil national setup since 2014. The Brazilian also held the role with Galatasaray from 2011 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2019.
Elite development coach: Vitor Matos
Liverpool added Vitor Matos to their coaching staff in July 2019 as their elite development coach. Klopp prised the Portuguese from FC Porto after eight years rising through the ranks at the Dragoes. He now acts as a bridge between the Reds’ first-team and academy sides.
Head of fitness and conditioning: Andreas Kornmayer
Klopp returned to Germany in July 2016 to raid Borussia Dortmund’s rivals, Bayern Munich, for Andreas Kornmayer. The German had worked for Der FCB since 2004 after starting off as a youth fitness coach before joining their first-team in 2010. He has been beside Klopp since.
Conditioning coach: Mark Hulse
Mark Hulse is another of the longest-serving members of Liverpool’s coaching staff having moved to Anfield in 2009. He joined the Reds as a conditioning coach following two years with Newcastle United. He also held the same role with Crystal Palace from 2006 to 2007.
