Liverpool FC Women

Liverpool FC Women are a founding member of the Women’s Super League and one of the division’s most successful sides. The club has origins dating back to 1989 and has also been associated with the men’s Liverpool team since 1994. While the 2022/23 campaign also marked the club’s return to the top-flight.

Club name

Liverpool FC Women took on their current name in July 2018 following a third rebranding of the club first established in 1989. The Reds’ Ladies had adopted the name Liverpool FC Ladies back in 1994 as a sign of the club first linking with the men’s Reds team. Liz Deighan originally founded the club back in 1989.

Liverpool FC Women founding year

Former England international Deighan established the club now known as Liverpool FC Women back in 1989 as Newton Ladies FC. The team later took on the name of Knowsley United WFC in 1991 as they became a founding member of the Women’s Football Association’s (WFA) National Premier Division.

Home stadium

Prenton Park has been the home stadium of Liverpool FC Women since 2018. The Reds’ Ladies reached an agreement with Tranmere Rovers to co-share their stadium in Birkenhead, Merseyside to replace the Reds’ academy side there. Liverpool’s reserves had used the ground as their home stadium since 2009.

Before Liverpool FC Women began sharing Prenton Park with Tranmere Rovers, the club played their home matches at DCBL Stadium. The Reds’ Ladies used the ground, once known as Lowerhouse Lane and the Halton Stadium, between 2013 and 2018 after leaving the West Lancashire College Stadium.

Training ground

Liverpool FC Women’s training ground is the Solar Campus, which is also owned by EFL League Two side Tranmere Rovers. The Reds’ Ladies co-share the site in Wallasey, Merseyside which boasts an artificial 3G pitch and turfed pitches. The 3G pitch is a full-size, floodlit pitch and is also available for private hire.

But the Daily Mail reported in February 2023 that Liverpool have entered negotiations with housing developers Torus over buying their former men’s training ground, Melwood, back. The club had sold the site for £10m in 2019 ahead of them moving to Liverpool’s new training ground, the AXA Training Centre.

Liverpool FC Women current league

Liverpool FC Women returned to the Women’s Super League from the 2022/23 campaign. The Reds’ Ladies secured their promotion back to the top-flight of the women’s game as the champions of the FA Women’s Championship. They had endured relegation from the top-flight during the 2019/20 season.

Only Chelsea FC Women and Arsenal WFC have yet won the Women’s Super League title more often than Liverpool FC Women. The Reds’ Ladies were one of the division’s founding eight members in 2011. They would also go on to win the top-flight title in back-to-back campaigns over the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Liverpool FC Women current manager

Matt Beard is the current manager of Liverpool FC Women after returning to the team in May 2021. He had previously coached the Reds’ Ladies to their successive Women’s Super League titles before leaving the club in 2015. The team would win the FA Women’s Championship in his first season back in charge.

His first spell also saw Liverpool FC Women feature in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time. While his time away from the Reds’ Ladies saw Beard take charge of the now-dissolved US team Boston Breakers before enjoying spells in charge of West Ham United Women and Bristol City Women.

Liverpool FC Women tickets

Fans wishing to attend Liverpool FC Women games can purchase tickets online on the Reds’ Ladies’ designated website. The Merseyside outfit also sell away coach travel through their site. Tickets for Liverpool FC Women’s matches at Prenton Park must be bought in advance with none on the gate.

Liverpool make tickets available for their women’s side around three weeks in advance of any game. While seating is allocated when booking, with tickets available in the Bebington Paddock and Town Paddock stands. The Reds’ Ladies also sell cup tickets as and when they advance in any relevant competition.

Parking at Liverpool FC Women’s home matches at Prenton Park is free on matchdays. But fans may have to pay a toll charge depending on their route to the ground as the Mersey Gateway Bridge uses a free-flow, camera-operated tolling system and the Mersey Tunnel also uses cash-operated tolling booths.
