Bundesliga clubs are reportedly keen on signing Joel Matip, with the Liverpool defender’s contract due to expire next summer.

The 32-year-old centre-back has been an ever-present figure for the Reds ever since moving to Anfield from Schalke 04 in 2016, with Matip making over 200 appearances for Liverpool.

Recently lauded by Wataru Endo as ‘amazing’, Matip is clearly a popular figure in the Liverpool dressing room, with the defender one of the more senior players at the club.

However, according to the Times, Matip is now attracting interest from German clubs, with the Cameroonian’s contract set to run out at the end of this season.

With Liverpool now reportedly set to delve into the January transfer market to sign a replacement for Matip, a departure in the summer seems extremely likely for the defender.

And a return to the Bundesliga would make a lot of sense for Matip, with the centre-back clearly good enough to still perform for a top club in one of Europe’s biggest divisions.

Having been born in Germany and come through one of the biggest clubs in the country in Schalke, it would make a lot of sense for Matip to return to the Bundesliga next year.

And with top sides already interested in signing the 32-year-old as a free-agent, a homecoming is now seemingly on the cards for Matip heading into 2024.

Indeed, Matip has done all he can possibly do at Liverpool after an incredible spell with the Reds, and the defender could now be tempted to return home to Germany.

Moreover, many top Bundesliga clubs could now be keen on signing Matip, who still has plenty to offer despite not being a first-choice defender at Liverpool
