Reported Liverpool target Donyell Malen could be up for sale during the January transfer window.

Malen has seemingly been a long-standing target for Liverpool. The Reds were first linked with the Dutchman prior to his move from PSV Eindhoven to Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Since then, a report from Germany surfaced only last Wednesday that claimed Liverpool are still interested in bringing Malen to Anfield.

If that really is the case, then journalist Florian Plettenberg has just given a very positive update indeed. The reporter took to X last night to claim that Dortmund are ‘open’ to letting the Netherlands international leave in 2024.

“News Donyell Malen: The 24 y/o is open for a new challenge in winter or summer as he’s not totally happy in Dortmund,” Plettenberg reports. “His new agency SEG is sounding out the market.

“BVB, open to letting him go. Price expectation: €30-35m [£26-30m]. Malen has a market in England!”

Malen on the market

Malen is certainly an interesting prospect who has perhaps not quite lived up to expectations at Dortmund,

Extremely quick and capable of playing across the forward line, you can see why Liverpool wanted him fresh out of PSV.

Malen bagged 55 goals in 116 games as a young player coming through in Eindhoven. However, he simply hasn’t been able to transfer that form to the Black and Yellows.

24 goals in 91 games isn’t a necessarily bad record, though. And at 24, Malen still has his best years ahead of him.

But the fact is that Liverpool simply don’t need another attacker in his mould just now.

Of course, we don’t know the full extent of Diogo Jota’s injury, it must be said. There is a small chance that if Jota is missing for longer than is being suggested, that the Reds may need a timely reinforcement in January. In that scenario, they could certainly do worse than taking a gamble on Malen.

Nevertheless, a gamble is still exactly what it would be. A punt on a player who hasn’t shown quite as much as hoped at a – with all due respect – worse team than Liverpool.

Plettenberg’s claim that Malen has a market in the Premier League is no surprise and he’ll perhaps be a good signing for someone. But unless there’s something we don’t know about, that shouldn’t be Liverpool.
