Michael Owen thinks Liverpool will be delighted that Arsenal beat Manchester City in the Premier League today.

The former striker thinks that Manchester City, who have now lost back-to-back Premier League matches, are ‘the team to beat this season’, as he told Premier League Productions (08/10/23 at 6:25 pm).

Therefore, he feels that Jurgen Klopp’s side will be glad to see the Treble winners drop points because it increases Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title.

Heading into the second international break of the season, the Reds, after dropping points at Brighton just hours earlier, are one point behind third-place Manchester City.

And perhaps to the surprise of many, it’s the north London duo sitting in the top two, with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in first place on goals scored.

If Man City continue in their current ways, then it just opens the door for the rest of the league to end the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s side in recent years.

Arsenal beat Man City

“I think it is,” said Owen. “I think for the rest of the Premier League. The likes of Liverpool, and even Tottenham, who often don’t support Arsenal in a game.

“But Man City are the team to beat this season. To take points off them brings everyone close together.

“I think, most of the neutrals, we have some big teams in the Premier League. They have their eyes on the prize and they probably wanted Arsenal to win today. And they got their wish.”

Liverpool the last side to dethrone Man City

The Liverpool midfield might be new-look, but there are still a number of players who have tasted Premier League title success, as well as being the last team to dethrone this trophy-crazy Man City side.

Even Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will admit that if those on Merseyside find their rhythm, then they will post 90+ points.

And as Pep Guardiola’s side have proven over the years, it’s going to take that amount of points to become champions of England.
