Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has admitted that his shooting was off-range against Toulouse last night.

Elliott was actually one of Liverpool’s better performers yesterday. On a Europa League evening where so few Reds turned up, the 20-year-old could at least claim to have put a shift in.

Nevertheless, speaking to liverpoolfc.com after the game, Elliott suggested that he wasn’t totally happy with his display, and in particular with his shooting.

“They sat back and made it very hard for us,” railed the youngster. “We only had limited opportunities and it was just down to us to take them. I had a few opportunities I felt I could have done better with and we had a few more, but as I said, we weren’t really there throughout the whole game and we deserved to not really come away with anything.

“We just need to keep going and making the right decisions and the right choices in the next game. We will reflect on this one and make sure we put that into the next one.”

Elliott admits shooting disappointment

In fairness to Harvey, he’s never one to shy away from a poor performance. Be it a disappointing team display or a below-par personal one, the young man is always quick to front up.

That perhaps became a little grating last season, when public cries of ‘we’ll reflect and put right’ never really came to fruition, but this season we’re minded to believe him.

And in actual fact, Elliott doesn’t really have to much to reflect on. As he has been all campaign, the £4.3m signing from Fulham was energetic and useful against Toulouse.

While many of his teammates sluggishly went through the motions, Elliott at least visibly tried to make things happen.

If there is something for him to work on though, then perhaps his shooting is a good thing to mention.

We didn’t see too much trouble with it last night. Besides a decently-struck curling shot that was headed away by a defender, Harvey didn’t have much of a sight of goal at all.

Perhaps that’s the problem, though. The youngster bagged just five times across 46 games last season. It isn’t a terrible return, but for someone with a good shot on him, Elliott should be scoring more.

From his admission last night, it’s clear that Liverpool’s No.19 knows that, though. Expect some hard work to be put in at the AXA Training Centre this week.
