It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s attack has been on fire so far this season.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City represented the first time all campaign that one of Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz was not on the scoresheet.

No matter which combination Jurgen Klopp chooses, one – or often more – of the famous five delivers.

But according to reports today, Liverpool could now be trying to add a sixth option to their cohort of attacking talent.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has claimed that the Reds are ‘very hot’ on RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda. If Liverpool can add a player who has already scored 13 times this season, their forward line could be taken to a new level.

Anyone who saw Openda’s two goals against City last night will concur that the 23-year-old is man who knows how to find the back of the net. He could be a revelation at Liverpool.

Liverpool target Openda

There will no doubt have been plenty of raised eyebrows at the news that Liverpool are keen on making Openda their latest signing from Leipzig this morning.

After all, the current scariness of the Reds’ attack means that further additions are not immediately necessary. Nevertheless, it’s wise for Liverpool to be looking ahead.

Salah’s long-term future in particular has been the subject of much debate, while Diaz has been flirting with Barcelona at times, too.

There’s no guarantee that Liverpool don’t need to replace someone in their attack before too long.

But even if they don’t, what’s the harm in adding a little more firepower? There are other areas of the squad that need addressing first, true, but if a player like Openda is on the market, why should Liverpool miss out?

The Belgium international would certainly fit in well with Klopp’s current options. Quick, strong and prolific, the former Lens striker looks like a player who could add another dimension to the Reds.

Obviously, that kind of quality doesn’t come cheaply. There’s certainly an argument that Liverpool could spend his reported £69m release clause better elsewhere.

But if they did add Openda to the likes of Salah, Diaz and Nunez, the Reds’ attack would be truly feared across the world.
