Jurgen Klopp has praised Caoimhin Kelleher after the Liverpool goalkeeper was subject to criticism after Sunday’s 4-3 win against Fulham.

The Republic of Ireland international started between the sticks with Alisson Becker out injured, and despite some impressive performances in Europe this season, Kelleher was disappointing.

However, Klopp has now backed the 25-year-old goalkeeper’s performance when speaking to the press, with the Liverpool boss stating that one of Fulham’s goals was lucky to have gone in.

With Kelleher set to start tomorrow against Sheffield United, the Cork-born talent will want to impress after Sunday’s performance, and Klopp has backed the Irish keeper to bounce back.

Klopp said: “I think he played a really good game. He was good in possession with his feet, but then we conceded three goals and one was an unlucky one.

“These things happen. They have nothing to do with quality, it’s a philosophy thing. He just needs to keep going, we need him to be there.”

Kelleher is clearly good enough to star for Liverpool, with Sunday’s performance hopefully only just a bad day at the office for the 25-year-old keeper.

And against Sheffield United tomorrow night, Kelleher will want to impress Klopp after now being publically backed by the Liverpool manager.

Three points could put the Reds top of the Premier League depending on how Arsenal get on at Kenilworth Road tonight against Luton Town.

And Kelleher could be key in getting Liverpool across the line against the Blades, who today have appointed a new manager in Chris Wilder.
